The scam is not just the fake media

Deepfake risk is usually described as a fake video or cloned voice. In real life, the dangerous part is the workflow around it: a convincing message, stolen context, urgency, and a request that moves money or access.

A data breach can supply names, phone numbers, addresses, job titles, partial account details, or relationship clues. AI-generated media can make that information feel like it is coming from a real person.

Why a breach can make impersonation easier

Scammers do not need a perfect clone if the surrounding details are accurate. A message that references your employer, a recent vendor, a family member, or a real account can lower your guard before the fake voice even starts talking.

That is why breach cleanup should include communication rules, not just password resets. The goal is to decide in advance how you will verify important requests when adrenaline is high.

The red flags are behavioral

Visual glitches and odd audio can still matter, but detection by artifact is getting weaker. The steadier signal is behavior: surprise contact, pressure, secrecy, a new phone number, a new app, a link, a request for money, or a request for an authentication code.

Treat urgent channel-switching as a risk marker. If someone asks you to continue on a new messaging app, click a link, download a tool, or keep the request secret, slow the interaction down.

  • A caller says they are family but cannot answer a shared question.
  • A boss or client asks for gift cards, crypto, wires, or login codes.
  • A known contact uses a new number and pushes you away from normal channels.
  • A video call is short, scripted, delayed, or avoids ordinary back-and-forth.

Use a second path before acting

Do not verify a suspicious request inside the suspicious conversation. Hang up, stop replying, and use a phone number, email thread, or internal chat you already trusted before the request arrived.

For families, a passphrase can help with emergency calls. For teams, use payment approval rules that require a second approver and a known channel. The point is to verify identity outside the attacker's script.

Protect the accounts that make fakes believable

Deepfake scams become more persuasive when attackers can pair fake media with real inboxes, social profiles, cloud photo libraries, or messaging accounts.

Start with the accounts that hold social context: email, phone carrier, banking, payroll, cloud storage, and social media. Use unique passwords, multi-factor authentication, account recovery checks, and alerts for new logins where available.

If you were targeted

Preserve evidence before you block: screenshots, usernames, phone numbers, email headers, transaction IDs, wallet addresses, call times, and links. If money moved, contact the financial institution immediately.

Report internet fraud to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center. If identity information was used, also use IdentityTheft.gov so you can create a recovery plan and documentation trail.
